The Process

The process of having a spider species named after you is an extremely scientific one, as it involves recording the new spider details on the Worldwide Database of Spiders.

You need not be worried about this however, as that’s handled by a select group of scientists.

All you need to do is call the Queensland Museum Foundation on 07 3842 9392 and make an appointment to visit the Queensland Museum to meet Dr Robert Raven, the Museum’s world-renowned arachnologist.

You will be shown a number of yet un-named spiders and be asked to make a selection of one that appeals to you most.

After you have made a tax-deductible donation to the Queensland Museum Foundation of $5000 or more, the process of naming the species will start taking place by the Queensland Museum.

Within four weeks you will be presented with a Certificate containing a detailed illustration of the spider and the accompanying scientific data.

The process of worldwide registration can take up to a year, but then it will remain on the database in perpetuity.

Your donation to the Foundation will provide support for three key activities:

• funding expeditions to ensure that the species is represented by both males and females. Species named without both sexes are often more unstable and not so 'safe' as good species. On such expeditions, thorough biological information is collected for inclusion in the publication and that is critical to determine whether the species will have an endangered status.

• training new young taxonomists in the discipline.

• covering publication costs in prestigious journals.
